Spiritual Journals

I believe people can learn to hear God (as in the Trinity: Father, Son, Holy Spirit) and get to know each one of them personally. Keeping a spiritual journal is one way to do this.
For me, this is the process: get alone with paper and pen, begin a conversation with God, write it down. As I write my thoughts and feelings to the Lord and then wait and listen I sometimes hear the Lord speaking back in my mind in a quiet voice. I write down whatever I believe I am hearing. I don't critique it or try to decide if it's really God. I just write. Later I look it over and if it lines up with God's word in the Bible, if it brings me closer to the Lord, if it leads me forward in a good and loving way, not condemning or belittling, then it is most likely God speaking.
When I have done this consistently for some time I have grown spiritually. At my best I do this 3-4 times a week for an hour or so at a time. It is a meditative process, not quick. And it does take some practice. But God is faithful and good and He does speak to his children.
Sometimes if I am outdoors doing this I take my camera and can add an appropriate photo to the journal entry. I thank God for the beauty of his creation and share time with him that way. I think He likes it. What artist doesn't like to share his creation with someone?
Developing a habit of conversation with the Lord, whether by keeping a journal or some other way, is very rewarding. I prefer the journaling because it is, for me, the best way to remember what God says to me. When life gets me down in some way I can read the Lord's words of love and encouragement for me and be lifted up. He may correct or direct, but he never condemns or is unloving in how he does it.
