SFG update and Euphorbia Bonfire

Some garden pictures after the first outdoor plantings. This one is planted at the edges with onions, beans at the far end, and marigolds..
The potato bin showing it's first growth.
One bed all planted with cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower - also onions and a few marigolds around the edges.
Some herbs and flowers waiting in the wings.
Another bed, again with onions, garlic, rattail radish, and marigolds. Nothing in the center yet. It will probably be home to melons or pumpkins.
Self-watering containers with lettuce mixes, stirfry mix, beets, and supposedly spinach - but I think I have a bad batch of spinach seed since it germinated very poorly.
Two kinds of peas where the trumpet vine that wouldn't bloom used to be.
Mini Bell Peppers in a SWC. When the weather is more stable I'll move it out away from the house.
Some volunteer seedlings in the compost pile. Melons, maybe?

I didn't know that some kinds of pussy willows went to fuzz. It was all over everything where I walked this week.
And last - a beautiful spring surprise - Euphorbia 'bonfire'. I bought it last year, apparently after it bloomed and didn't know it had such a gorgeous flower. I like it so much I may buy one or two more. But I saw a gardening show that claimed it was only hardy to Zone 7. Well, it wintered over last year here in Zone 5 and we had a very cold winter...
Happy Gardening!

  1. I love how you have veggies just tucked in everywhere! That is a lovely cabbage you have, mine are still quite small. Kim

  3. That Bonfire is hot stuff. But I like the lily pads better - they're the promise of a great flower.

  5. Wow, I love that Bonfire! I haven't seen any here.

I can't quite tell for sure from the pic, but is your pond raised or set in the ground? I have a hard-to-mow corner where I'd like to put in a little pond. We have tons of surface roots, so I'm considering raising it, or only partially sinking it.

  6. Your new beds are looking wonderful. I really like your potato bag. I am trying a few in compost bags this year, yours looks much nicer. I may have to steal your idea next season :-)

Do you consume your vegetable garden, or does your vegetable garden consume you?
